Altua is the deity of honor, nobility, and just warfare. She is the guardian of the Sacred Tenets of Warfare by which civilized and good races conduct battle. She is most often depicted as a human women of perfect proportions with a bald, clean head. She is usually depicted either adorned in fanciful plate armor wielding a longsword and shield or wearing a flowing, white robe while carrying the scales of justice.
Altua’s followers are warriors, judges, and politicians that are concerned with maintaining ethics during wartime. A number of knightly orders are dedicated to her, and almost all invoke her name before battle. Wartime advisers often seek spiritual guidance from Altua’s priests, and these priests are often called upon to judge those who have violated the tenets of just war. Many nobles are also followers of Altua as she is the patron of the ideals of nobility.
Clerics of Altua pray for their spells at sunrise, usually laying their weapons and armor out for the rising sun to cover in its light. Followers of Altua observe few holy days, although Altua asks that her followers refrain from combat (excluding self-defense and aiding those in need) each week on Starday, as it marks a day for remembrance of those who have fallen in battle.
Clergy and Temples
Clerics of Altua are often found only in the upper echelons of society; the poor and the downtrodden have little need for guidance on the doctrine of just warfare. Many clerics of Altua are found within companies of soldiers, serving as chaplains and healers for those who are wounded. Other clerics work closely with the nobility to ensure that wars on the whole are conducted with civility. When performing rituals or leading prayer services, clerics of Altua tend to wear robes that are white and sky blue in color.
Temples of Altua are uncommon, and are usually only present in political and military centers where the temples double as courthouses, hospitals, sanctuaries, and barracks. The temples range in appearance, with larger temples being ornate, architectural marvels with a number of chambers and prayer rooms, and smaller temples being simple, stone buildings with a single room. Included in the Sacred Tenets is that temples of Altua are to always remain neutral ground in an armed conflict with only the temple guards allowed to wield weapons. For this reason, temples of Altua are optimal locations for negotiations and treaty signings.
War is just insofar as it promotes a righteous cause, protects the innocent, and is conducted in a manner that is neither careless nor unnecessarily destructive. Victory must be pursued by the righteous party, else evil will grow incessantly, but this victory must be pursued with enduring peace as a primary goal. All combat must be conducted with a degree of civility, and those who violate the Sacred Tenets must be punished for their actions.
